Dry mouth or xerostomia is a common problem, making swallowing very difficult. We eat food that we just can’t swallow, and so subsequently, people avoid eating food only. Some factors that contribute to this difficulty are nasal or sinus problems, including allergy, medications, dental problems, smoking, or head injuries, facial injuries, Alzheimer’s, and even Parkinson’s.
Frequent causes of dry mouth is dehydration, breathing from mouth, stress or anxiety, smoking, high consumption of acidic beverages like tea or coffee. Again, lack of oral hygiene, and problems with how the salivary gland works. And so, you make less saliva. Low saliva production is common as you age. So, how could you tackle this problem?
Drinking Water
Ayurveda recommends drinking warm water at the interval of 40 minutes. This will help maintaining the salivary production and avoid the metallic taste of your mouth, which will lead to tastelessness. Having warm water 30 minutes before meal is a must. If drinking water by itself becomes difficult, then you should do something about it. So, take 5-6 crushed garlic cloves. Then, add them to a cup of boiling water. Boil for 2 minutes, and then add a pinch of salt. Drink this mixture while it is still hot. You should take this twice in a day to restore the sense of taste.
Cayenne Pepper
Cayenne pepper, fennel seed, and cardamom are some of the spices which should be used by those who have dry mouth. You can have these spices in your food, or either chew some fennel seed and cardamom after food.

Lemon
It is acidic in nature, so it is excellent to treat tastelessness. It cleanses the mouth and stimulates the saliva production. Drink a glass of lemon juice every day in the morning. You can even add honey to your lemon juice.
Aloe Vera
The gel which is there in the plant leaf is a very good moisturizer for your mouth. Having aloe vera juice at least once a day is suggested.
Ginger
Ginger is a well-known herb which really helps secretion of saliva, and this cures the dry mouth. Adding ginger to your tea along with clove would help you tremendously.
Oral Hygiene
Oral hygiene is one of the most important factors that can help overcome dry mouth and also tastelessness. Brushing your teeth twice in a day, gargling with salt water, these are some of the techniques you should follow. A saline wash for your mouth is also recommended. For that, you need to blend one cup of warm water with one-fourth teaspoonful of baking soda and one-eighth teaspoonful of salt.
Swish in your mouth for a few seconds and then rinse it out. Repeat this every three hours. Some people get great relief by taking a tablespoonful of oil, oil baby sesame oil or coconut oil in mouth and swishing it in the mouth for 15 to 20 minutes and then removing that oil out. This technique is also known as dandush or oil pulling.
Chewing your Food Properly
We usually hurry up while eating and stuff your mouth with food especially when we are consuming something with love. This causes problem in the saliva production and might also lead to some gastrointestinal problems. So chew your food really well and try and focus on your food. Yoga
In yoga, we strongly recommend practicing Jal Neti, Kapal Ranjan Hoti and dandush, filling mouth with water tightly and keeping it for some time. Do Jivhamul Shodhan. Along with Jivhamul Shodhan, do Siham Mudra, Lion Pose, cleaning the tongue and cleaning the root of the tongue. All these techniques are very important to overcome dry mouth. Also, neck stretches are very much beneficial to overcome the problem. These techniques stimulate the salivary glands and help fight the underlying cause of your problem named allergies. Practicing pranayama like Sheetali, Sitkari, Brahmari, Ujjayi are very very beneficial.
Stay hydrated and go on sipping some fluid throughout the day. Brushing your teeth twice daily and using fluoride toothpaste would help. Eating food in small bites to encourage saliva production and chewing them properly. Avoid caffeinated beverages as it increases the dryness in your mouth. Use humidifier in your home, specially in your bedroom. Become aware. See to it that you breathe through your nose not from your mouth.
